Sure sign of recession

Southwest Airlines is no longer serving complimentary donuts and coffee at Love Field! And I was early enough at the airport on Wednesday to see the Donut Troll.

"Think they'll find me up here??"

It sleeps on my couch

I have a twenty year old bump on my upstairs couch. Greta tried two wake up kisses with no result, other than the bump turned away from said kisser. The transition from dorm life to home life has begun. . . .

If only I were a minority...

Okay, seriously. I am so sick and tired of seeing scholarship applications that say they were made "in part, to help minorities and disabled students." Seeing as how I'd really rather NOT permanently lose the usage of some part or piece of my body, my only other viable option is "minority."

So let's put our heads together, people. What minority group can I claim? Seriously. Maybe somewhere in our family, way WAY back, there was a South African? That would work.

Or maybe we could figure out how to claim "Cherokee"? Because that would be pretty sweet too. PLEASE. It could mean the difference of thousands of dollars if someone decides to confess a torrid love affair years ago with Dancing Bear or Ling Nguyen or L—a (pronounced "luh-dash-ah") ... Johnson.

So start 'fessing people. Because my shot at grad school hangs dangerously in the balance.

The Fatal Folly of Pubescent Pedestrians

The following is a brief editorial I wrote for The Stampede (Sachse High School's student newspaper) back when the staff was submitting its end-of-year commentaries that, per tradition, we all published in the last issue. This wasn't ever actually submitted, but I thought it was somewhat entertaining. I remember the day I wrote it too — I nearly ran over someone on my way to school. Enjoy, dear readers ...

Common sense has become an endangered species of the teenage mind. Students live in a world where they take their very existence for granted. It is the stereotypical – and often correct presumption that teenagers have an “untouchable” attitude; they feel as though nothing can touch them. They are wrong.

But what authority do I have to stand here and make such statements? Picture this: Miles Road, 6:30 a.m. I drive a 15-passenger van, a 2-to-3-ton behemoth that defies all manner of automotive assault. Ahead of me is a high school student, on her way into the building a little early. Now, 45 miles per hour may not seem very fast, but buses don’t stop on a dime exactly. She’s standing in the median (the part where people don’t drive, usually covered in grass or other manner of greenery), as if waiting for some divine sign to begin the last stretch of her treacherous journey. But, as I come within the last 25 feet of where she stands, she starts across.

Allow me to illuminate something to any pedestrian who ever thought it was okay to step out into traffic simply because there is an array of white lines on the ground in front of you: you’re stupid. You know what, you’re right; you have every legal right to cross that street, because, after all, pedestrians have right-of-way. But no manner of legal babble is going to stop that car from running you over.

But luckily, you have the option of suing the driver. There’s a catch, however: you have to survive. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter.

The bottom line is this: you cannot win a fight with a moving vehicle. Crosswalks were designed to confine pedestrians to a specific location, safe from traffic, but they don’t make you immune to the consequences of stepping out in front of it. For the sake of everyone involved, just look both ways.

(Shhh ... I'm driving home now!) =D

Surprise!

Add another to the list...

I just got the email saying I've been selected to serve as a Board Member for the UOSA Transit Appeals Board. I'm just racking up the positions for next year.

In case you didn't see down there, I have another post that randomly showed up underneath Katie's most recent one because it took me too long to post it. Just don't forget it!

sin

We've had storms all day so the church had a black out.
Vivi turns and looks at Daddy-o "Why's it so dark in here?"
i look at her and reply "It's your sins." That got a giggle out of the Usher.

And get this at the end when we pull out a "Thanks be to God." the lights all turn on right after the 'd'.

^-^

What's up, Internetland?

Hello everyone.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to focus long enough to make this a long post or not, but if it is, then settle down, because you're in for a doozie.

Speaking of focusing, I'm not sure what it is, but Zekie's been having trouble focusing on anything lately. The kind of not-focusing that he suspects is usually medicated. Hrmph. Time to see the doctor. I'm currently self-medicating with fish oil, but it's not really doing the trick yet. So keep a good thought.

By the way, I've officially decided to cut down my schedule for next year. It currently stands at 24 hours of classes, but I'm going to drop it to 15, I think. Especially considering I was recently appointed to the UOSA (University of Oklahoma Student Association) Directorate of Academics as the Coordinator for Graduation Retention. (Truth be told, I have no idea what that position entails; it wasn't one of the ones that I actually applied for, but they wanted me on Exec General Counsel, so they gave me that position.)

Oh, and I'm also a councilman for the Honor Council (though I think I already told you about that). I went to my first meeting on Thursday — WOW what a group. The group is already pretty hilarious, as it is, so it was a lot of fun. Then we got down to business. The Honor Council is the board that cases of academic misconduct are referred to by the Provost. We don't necessarily have the *final* say, but our faculty advisor, the Vice-Provost, who handles these cases, uses our recommendation more often than not. It's a pretty high position, and there's a lot of responsibility associated with it; last meeting we suspended four students for a term. Eep.

As far as summer plans go, *ugh* I'm so tired of the word "plan." Still no word yet on whether I'll be traveling abroad (hopefully that changes soon), but either way, I've put in an application to the Stonebriar Apple Store as a Personal Shopper. Spending other people's money all day for pay? Sign me up!

Speaking of money, thanks a lot, Saint Anthony's, for holding two weeks worth of my checks and then cashing them all at once. Practically bankrupted me. The cashed some of them one time, but not all of them, then one day *surprise!* there's the rest. -_- <--note unhappy with tithing face.

But to change the subject back to school, I am SO ready to be done with this term. It started out pretty well, actually. For taking 21 hours, it was really simple, too. Hardly anything to do. Assignments every so often, but I had it planned out, and so nothing seemed too bad. Then midterms start. There was one week where I had FOUR exams in the same week. Originally, it was three on Monday and one on Wednesday, but that changed when I asked for extensions on the Monday ones. Which meant FOUR exams on Wednesday. Ironically, the one I did the best on, my Psychology exam, was the one I chose not to study for. And I ACED that one — like 100% aced! Go figure.

Anyway, so next term will be somewhat less academics-intensive. Although I'm pretty involved now. Which is good, in a way — I mean, I guess I should be, and it *does* look good on my CV and everything. Not to mention I get to meet people and get out and do things and such. Except it's just all over the place. Go figure.

And speaking of all-over-the-place (like my mind today), I'm also the Editor-in-Chief-Select of the Journal of Global Affairs for next year. They were sufficiently impressed with my somewhat insane dedication to the project (read: I stayed up until 4 am with the Chief this year making layout corrections to make our publisher deadline) and I'm also the Journal's Legal Counsel (which means I get to file our journal for copyright and with the Library of Congress, and all that happy jazz). Yay for me. =)

And, yet another end-of-year announcement, although this one is somewhat pending — I MIGHT be taking the position of Office Assistant for the dorm tower I work for. All that would mean, really, is a bump in hours (no bump in salary — poopy), and work during the week instead of weekends. My boss asked me specifically to consider the position last year (for this year), but I turned him down because I figured I'd be able to get a better job off campus. Even if that IS the case, this is a guaranteed job, and there's no stopping me next year getting a job waiting tables or something off campus on the weekends or something (supposing I have four wheels and an engine to push them, which may or may not happen), so I probably shouldn't pass it up this time.

(I just realized that I hadn't posted this, but I'm studying for a Russian test tomorrow now, so I'll finish up later, I guess. Keep a good thought for me for the test tomorrow! Love you all!)
